EP. 1 · THE GYM
EPISODE 1THE GYM
The Shadow and the Spark · Book 1
The gym smelled faintly of varnished wood and old sweat.
Basketballs thudded against the polished floor on the far courts where a few other students finished their games, the sounds echoing through the wide space in uneven rhythms.
High windows lined the upper walls, and the late-afternoon sunlight poured through them in slanting beams, turning drifting dust into threads of gold.
Trinity moved through the light with a basketball in his hands.
He dribbled hard, the ball snapping against the floor as he crossed from one side of the court to the other.
There was nobody guarding him, but he moved as though defenders surrounded him anyway—
Sweat clung to his forehead and dampened the collar of his shirt, yet his breathing remained steady.
The gym had always felt different from the rest of the world.
Outside these walls, everything seemed to move too quickly. School, expectations, the strange feeling that life was rushing toward something he couldn’t quite see.
But here, with the sound of the ball and the squeak of his shoes on the floor, everything settled into place.
The world made sense on a basketball court.
Echo called.
Trinity looked toward the bleachers.
His brother sat sprawled across the front row, one arm draped over the seat beside him, looking completely unimpressed.
A grin tugged at Trinity’s face.
He planted his feet and rose into his shot.
For a heartbeat, everything seemed to slow.
The ball left his fingertips and spun through the warm air, and a strange certainty settled over him.
It wasn’t confidence.
It felt deeper than that—like the world had already decided what would happen
and was merely waiting for him to catch up.
The ball slipped cleanly through the net.
Swish.
The sound echoed softly through the gym.
Echo clapped once, lazily.
Trinity caught the ball as it bounced back toward him and shook his head with a smile.
Later, they left the gym together.
Their shoes squeaked softly against the empty hallway as they walked toward the exit.
The noise seemed unusually loud now that the school had mostly emptied, each step bouncing off the lockers and painted walls before fading into silence.
When they stepped outside, the world felt different.
The sun had already disappeared beyond the horizon, leaving behind a deep blue dusk that softened the edges of everything.
Streetlights flickered on overhead, their pale orange glow reflecting in puddles left by yesterday’s rain.
Somewhere in the distance, a car passed, but even that sound seemed strangely muted.
Night always changed things.
The air carried a faint pressure, difficult to explain, as if reality itself had grown thinner and quieter.
Shadows lingered a little longer than they should have, and empty spaces seemed somehow deeper.
Echo walked beside him with his hands buried in his pockets, kicking a loose pebble along the sidewalk.
he asked.
His voice sounded strange.
Not wrong, exactly. Just slightly delayed, as if the words had needed an extra moment to find their way into the air.
Trinity glanced at him.
Echo shrugged and looked up at the darkening sky.
They walked in silence for a few moments.
A cool breeze moved through the street, rustling the leaves of a nearby tree.
For an instant, the space between the brothers felt subtly uneven, as though the world didn’t distribute itself equally around them.
The shadows seemed to lean one way, the air itself carrying a slight imbalance.
Then the feeling passed.
Trinity never noticed it.
